My dog's eye is scratched & foggy but not bothering her. Vet needed?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 26 lbs

Biscuit has a bit of discharge (clear mostly) coming from her right eye. It looks like it might be a scratch either from my car or herself. It also is a bit white/foggy around the scratch. Doesn't seem to be bothering her. What do I do?! Should I leave it and it will heal on its own or must I take her in to see the vet?

You must take Biscuit into the vet asap for this problem. Scratches to the eye can lead to ulcers when left untreated, and this can lead to permanent vision loss. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it is considered an emergency. Please take her into a vet right away.

No, there is no way to treat this without seeing a vet, and leaving this untreated can lead to vision loss. A scratch can turn into an ulcer without treatment, and I've seen ulcers causes permanent vision loss including eyes needing to be removed due to the seriousness of one. You need to take Zoey into a vet asap to have this treated. Best of luck.

I’m sorry to hear about Lilly! This looks like it could be a corneal ulcer or laceration. These are very painful and often do not heal without antibiotic eye ointment/drops. I strongly recommend taking Lilly into the vet as soon as possible to get it checked out. Your vet may recommend a special stain to see if the scratch penetrates the surface of the eye or not. If so, an ointment or drip will be recommended, as will an E-collar. In fact, if you have an e-collar, put it on Lilly now and leave it until you can get to the vet. This will prevent scratching and rubbing at the eye which is the number one reason eye ulcers do lot heal. Hope this helps! Best of luck to you and Lilly!

Cloudy eyes should always constitute an emergency vet visit. Since you know there is possible trauma, there could be an abrasion or corneal ulcer, something stuck under an eyelid, a hole in the cornea, or severe inflammation. There are several eye tests the vet may recommend after examining the eye to determine the most appropriate treatment.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can give her at home for her eye problem. A dog's eye reacts differently to human eye medications than humans, and you could accidentally do harm. Baby girl needs to see a vet immediately. Eye conditions should be considered emergencies, as leaving them can lead to vision loss. Based on the cloudiness of her eye, she could have glaucoma, a serious eye infection, trauma to the eye, or cataracts. She does need to see a vet right away, so I would take her in now to a vet. The vet can determine what is causing her problem and how best to treat it. Try to keep her from scratching her eye with an Ecollar, as she may accidentally do damage to cornea from her claws.

Good morning! Yes, You are right that redness, squinting, and discharge are all signs of a corneal scratch and should be seen right away. I can certainly understand being concerned about Bruski! He is in need of immediate veterinary attention, as if the cat scratched his eye, he could now have an infection in his eye. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Bruski into the vet right away to have his eye examined and treated.

It seems like your dog has a corneal ulceration, which requires an immediate check up and treatment. The check up is essential to be able to determine the depth of the ulceration and decide appropriate treatment. Eye drops versus surgery are the two treatment options. Poor Quincy! It's hard to tell exactly what's going on without being able to do a more complete eye exam in person, but from what I can see in the photo, I'm very concerned that she may have a severe corneal ulcer - this is basically a partial hole in the surface of the eye, which can be very serious. Because of this, I would recommend having her seen at an emergency clinic today for a full eye exam. If she does have a deep/severe corneal ulcer, having it treated as soon as possible will give her the best chance of recovery without losing vision in the affected eye, or even losing the eye itself.

I am very sorry to hear about Cookie. While it isn't possible for us to diagnose based on a photo I am concerned this could potentially be a perforation of the cornea due to a deep ulcer (basically a hole in the surface of the eye and you are seeing the vitreous inside the eye coming out). This would be considered an emergency and I would recommend travel to an emergency vet if at all possible. If one is not available, then keep her as quiet as possible until your vet opens and if you have an e-collar put it on her so she cannot rub or scratch at the eye and cause it to worsen.
