Why is my dog licking his irritated skin between his hind legs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | neutered | 13 years and 5 months old | 28 lbs

My 13 year old Shiba Inu is now experiencing skin irriatation in area between hind legs and is always licking it and the hair is now gone and looks very irritated. He seems skittish now and what do I do? or what can I do for him? is there an ointment or wash that will help? he is on the same diet of just dog food called Ultra for seniors.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Jerod. There probably isn't much at this point that you can do at home. He needs to be seen by your veterinarian so they can assess him. This is most likely a bacterial skin infection from allergies, external parasites (fleas, ticks, mites), fungal/yeast infection, among other causes. Your vet can examine him and discuss a diagnostic/treatment plan for Jerod. Treatment may involve oral antibiotics, anti-itch medicines, Elizabethan collar to prevent licking, etc. Good luck
