My dog ate a lollipop. Is it dangerous? What should I watch for?

This candy is not toxic for your pup. It's a lot of sugar, so he may be a bit hyperactive and may have some intestinal upset (vomiting or diarrhea). If he has vomiting or diarrhea that lasts for more than 24 hours, is very lethargic, or otherwise seems off, I would recommend a vet visit, but there's nothing you need to do right now. I think the sticks are made out of paper which should soften pretty quickly in the stomach. If the stick is plastic there could be slightly more concern for it to get stuck somewhere but I still think it would not perforate the stomach or intestines. You should monitor him for vomiting or a decreased appetite.

Hi, thank you for using Boop by Petco! Poor Gretchen!! I highly recommend you take Gretchen to your Vet ASAP or an emergency hospital now. Some candy contains xylitol which is highly toxic to dogs. It causes low blood sugar and liver failure. Another possibility is a stomach or intestinal obstruction (the wrappers are stuck and need to be surgically removed) or pancreatitis secondary to the candy. After the Vet does an exam they will want to run full blood work and possibly belly X-rays. I hope this helps and I wish Gretchen the best!

Here are the ingredients I found from Google- Ingredients: Glucose Syrup (Wheat or Corn), Cane Sugar, Thickener (1401 or 1420)(Wheat), Gelatine, Food Acid (Citric), Flavours, Colours (171, 120, 160c, 160a, 153, 100, 141). Contains Wheat. Made on equipment that also processes products containing Milk. Nothing in here is a big concern, mostly glucose/sugar. An ingestion like this (dietary indiscretion) sometimes will lead to nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. I would monitor and be on the lookout for these problems/signs. If these signs develop, I would contact your vet unless they resolve quickly. Your vet can advise if the signs persist. Good luck with Louey and keep her out of the sweets!

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Fortunately, there are no toxic ingredients for dogs in this product. Ingestion of large amount of sugar may produce vomiting and transient diarrhea but Kahlua should not develop any more serious symptoms. Please, offer your puppy small amounts of water every 30-60 minutes and monitor her closely at home. If she does develop diarrhea and profuse vomiting, you may have to take her to your local vets to get symptomatic treatment.

It is likely this hard candy will be broken down in her stomach by the stomach acid, but the sugar from it may give her a tummy ache. I would check the ingredients of the hard candy to make sure there is no xylitol in it. That's because xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, and if it does have that ingredient, she will need to see a vet immediately. Xylitol ingestion can be fatal. Otherwise, she should be fine aside from the chance of GI upset in the form of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Should you see that, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.

If Hennighn just swallowed the stick, you can take into into the vet right away for them to induce vomiting. The only concern with this is that it could get stuck in the esophagus, which would be a bad complication. The other option is to wait and see if he digests and passes the stick. Dogs do eat wood, and often pass it without problem. You will need to monitor his feces and his behavior. The stick should pass within 24-48 hours. If he starts vomiting, having diarrhea, stops eating, or becomes very lethargic, then it is likely that the stick is stuck, and he will need to see a vet right away. Hennighn is a big dog, and Labs often eat things they aren't supposed to, so I wouldn't be surprised if he passed it on his own. Give him a slice of whole wheat bread now, and with every meal, to give him more fiber and encourage the stick to pass along. The good news is that usually corn dog sticks don’t cause too much trauma in terms of the sharp edges. Sometimes, they don’t even eat any, they just chew it. If Pax is acting great, give him a slice of bread which can stick to the sharper pieces and ease their passing. That being said, it can still cause some vomiting or diarrhea and if you see these, or if you see lethargy or any other concerning signs, it time to take Pax to your vet.
