What fat and protein levels do Mini Schnauzer puppies and adults need?

Hi i am think about getting mini schnauzer for a sister of mine what should the fat % be at protien % be at for a mini schnauzer puppy and for a full grown mini schnauzer adult dog ?

Great question! A puppy's diet should have 8% fat and at least 22% protein. Adult dogs need 5% fat and 18% protein at a minimum. A high quality puppy formulated food and adult dog food will provide this for them. I hope this helps!

I'd like to know the amount of puppy dry food ( hills science diet) mixed with water I should give to a miniature schnauzer at 5 weeks old. She weighs 785gr. And how many times per day.
Irati should eat about 1/3-1/2 cup of Science Diet puppy food per day mixed with some water, divided into smaller meals. Since she is still quite young and small, I generally recommend feeding 4-5 times per day. I'm working under the assumption that she is no longer with her mother, and as such is not nursing. If she is still nursing from her mom, she will not need quite as much food. As a future reference, following the chart on the bag of puppy food as Irati grows will be helpful, as you will frequently need to adjust the volume of kibble that she is eating. She should continue eating puppy food until she is 1 year old, after which time she can be transitioned to an adult dog food. Any time you make a chance in her diet, be sure to do so gradually over 5-7 days. I hope this helps!

Thank you Jessica for your answer! The same company makes a puppy formula that 22% protein and 12% fat. Is this suitable for puppies or do they need more protein and fat? I just want to know for when a get a puppy next.
Puppies will need a higher protein and fat percentage compared to an adult dog as they are still growing, and so put the extra calories to use. Foods for puppies will often be labeled as a puppy formula or for "all stages of growth" when looking for the correct formulation for a puppy. Glad I could help!

The National Research Council on Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats lists protein and fat requirements for growing puppies in grams per day. Unfortunately this can be confusing because most pet food labels show minimum protein and fat content as a % basis. Puppies need 56 g of crude protein and 21 g of total fat per day. I have fed my dog Purina ProPlan from when she was 6 weeks old up to now - 13.5 years! There will be feeding guidelines on any bag of dog food. Those are a good starting point as to the amount.

I got Maddie weighed today and she weighs 19lbs is she overweight?
This is above the upper weight range typical of Miniature Schnauzer's so yes she may be overweight. I see she's only about 8 months old, so instead of putting her on a diet (it's because she's still growing and you shouldn't restrict her feed when she's growing), I would increase her exercise. Make sure she gets at least 30 minutes of exercise twice a day.

Can a puppy have a food that's 22% protein? Is this high enough? I don't have a puppy right now but I like the brand I'm using so I wanted to know if I could feed that to a puppy in the future. It says it's for puppies it's by natural balance.
This is a great question! The American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), the organization that oversees pet nutrition, requires that all puppy foods have at least 22% protein in it. So to answer your question, yes this is fine for your puppy. I hope this helps :-)

Should my dog have 20% protein, 10% fat, 25% protein, 13% fat or 30% protein, 17% fat? She's currently on Natural Balance L.I.D. Formulas which is 20% protein, 10% fat but I'm wondering if this is enough for her? I will say with the natural balance
The recommended level for an adult, spayed dog is about 18% protein and 9-15% fat. If she is active as in a working dog, doing agility trials several times per week, or other high-intensity activities, then a higher fat/protein combination is needed as the body uses up more energy and the muscles need to be continually supplied with protein. However, for a typical house pet with regular exercise, sticking to the recommended amount is best. Overfeeding leads to excess calories which turn into fat and weight gain and are not used.

My miniature schnauzer is 14 years old. We have tried 2 different dry foods for her and she is still not losing weight. She weighs 28 lbs. We are currently feeding her Royal Canin for miniature schnauzers. We had tried Natures Choice pumpkin flavor
If it was not yet done, you should take Jada to your vet and have her thyroid tested. This is a blood test that will determine whether her thyroid is working properly or not. If it is hypoactive your dog would gain a lot of weight and have a hard time losing it. Another test that may be necessary is a test for Cushings disease. You should try feeding a weight reduction diet such as Hill's Prescription Diet r/d Weight Reduction Chicken Flavor Dry Dog Food. Your veterinarian should have this for sale. And she will need lots of exercise, such as going for walkies and playing with a ball.

How much protein is the right amount for dogs? Some dog foods have 30% plus others much less.
30% is excessive and there is no added benefit to that level. If she is a high energy dog then a higher fat content is better to maintain weight if that is an issue. 20-25% is most commonly found in adult maintenance foods.

Hello. At 7 years of age, I would consider them seniors. You definitely do not want to feed them the SO unless crystals or stones are already present. I think the weight management diet is an excellent choice. Do not worry about feeding a grain free unless they have demonstrated a sensitivity to these ingredients. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.
