How to reintroduce cats after redirected aggression and hissing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

I have two cats that got along great. One is 4 years old (Lupe) , the other is 2 (Luna). One day Luna redirected aggression towards Lupe as a result of a cat outside taunting her. I separated the two cats by keeping Lupe in our guest room that he stays in normally. I've tried "sharing" their smells and giving them treats near each other through a cracked door (so they could see each other but not get to each other) but Lupe is now defensive and hisses at her on sight. It's been two weeks. Help!

Be patient and keep doing what you are doing! Consider purchasing feliway and using the diffusers and spray. In a few more weeks I would recommend putting Luna in a kennel in the main living area and allowing Lupe to see her without direct contact. Maybe do this for a few hours every day for a few weeks. Cats hold grudges and can take weeks to months to calm down. You are doing great- keep it up! Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
