What is this black dirt-like spot on my dog's inner thigh?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 12 lbs

On the inner thigh of my pup's back leg, he has this little black/brown rash. It looks like dirt, but he's been cleaned and is without fleas. Any ideas of what this is? The spot doesn't appear to aggravate him, he doesn't itch or bite it, or anything. Just something I noticed when cleaning him.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see the area that you’re referring to on Zekes thigh. It does appear to be spreading. This can be caused by clogged pores or follicles, a skin infection, or for mites. It is important to have him looked at by a vet to determine exactly what is causing it. That can also prescribe medication, as well as a medicated shampoo, and treat the mites if he has any.
