My dog's side bump is red, bleeding, and growing. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 70 lbs

When I got my dog, he had a small bump on his side. The vet told me not to worry and that it must have just been a minor scratch he got. They said it seemed like he’s had it for a while. Recently, the bump has gotten much bigger and much more red with signs of minor bleeding. It doesn’t irritate him at all and he doesn’t freak up until I look at it. Should I be worried much?

It could be that the bump has turned into an abscess, or localised infection. Do you have any pictures that you could post ? Given the fact it does not affect him that much, if he is still well in himself , I would book him in for a check up after the week-end, sooner if becoming lethargic or not eating or even restless scratching at it. Have you tried to clean it gently ? Feel free to contact us in a consultation with pictures or just post pictures here.
