Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 15 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs
My 12 pound male shitzu gets very stiff with arthritis and sometimes when trying to stand or walk will sometimes cry until I massage his joints. My vet said just get him drugstore condroitan/glucosamine but doesn't seem to help much. Any other medications you can suggest. The vet says he is otherwise healthy.

At this point it seems he will need anti inflammatories pain killers on a regular basis, dogs can only take very specific pain killers, you will have to get a prescription from your vet for one of those: Rimadyl, Metacam, Previcox or Onsior.

Hi there! Yes, there are a number of prescription medications that can be very helpful for dogs with arthritis issues, including NSAIDs such as Rimadyl or Metacam, tramadol, and/or gabapentin. Legally, we cannot prescribe medication for any pet without an exam, so you will need to take Rocky to a veterinarian in your area for an in-person exam and discussion of his issues. That veterinarian should be able to prescribe an appropriate medication for him to help with his pain and stiffness.
