Shiba Inu toe cyst won't heal with antibiotics. Need a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 19 lbs

Hello, my 4 year old Shiba Inu PJ has what my vet has called a cyst between her toes. She was on antibiotics for about 2 weeks and the size didn’t decrease or go away. She said to just leave it as it’s not bothering her. I am just looking for a second opinion? She I seek another vet to look at it?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I see the area you are referring to, it appears to be a dark, slightly raised area between her toes. This definitely looks like it can be a cyst. Unfortunately, cysts can be very difficult to treat with antibiotics as the area can always get wet and is in contact with the ground, etc. You can definitely go for a second opinion - another treatment option would be to remove the cyst (this would have to be done under general anesthesia), but may cause PJ even more discomfort. Some vets will recommend a prolonged course of antibiotics as well as topical treatments or Epsom salt soaks. Underlying causes such as a yeast infection or mites living in the hair follicles should be ruled out as well.
