My dog's eye has green gunk and cries when touched. What's wrong?

Your puppy should see a veterinarian right away. It appears that she has an eye infection and without seeing it in person, it is impossible to evaluate the condition of the cornea or surface of the eye. It is always best to have eye problems diagnosed and treated within the first 24 hours of symptoms to make sure the problem does not progress. Your pup will at least require some prescription eye medication and possibly other mess depending on the severity of the problem.

It's probably some kind of infection that should be seen by a veterinarian. Without an exam there's no way to know just what the cause is and therefore finding the correct treatment is difficult. Keeping it clean is helpful, but she may need antibiotics and topical medication to clear the infection and keep it from spreading further to the rest of the pips.

A pink eye with thick green or yellow discharge could indicate conjunctivitis or something stuck in the conjunctival sac (the tissue surrounding the inner eye). A pink eye with squinting and clear discharge (in your picture the discharge looks more clear), or cloudiness to the eye could be a sign of a scratch on the surface of the eye. I'd recommend having your veterinarian examine Dixie's eye. They can stain her eye to look for a scratch and can prescribe eye medications if needed.

Hello. There could be a small scratch on the cornea that is just not healing, or there is a piece of debris underneath the third eyelid. This is a common place for a piece of weed or a seed to become trapped, & the only safe way to check this is to apply a drop of anesthetic to the eye & pull the third eyelid up with a pair of forceps. Even if nothing is found, this might be a case of folliculitis of the third eyelid. It will take your vet only a few minutes to check all this out, does not require any sedation or general anesthesia, & you can have your answer immediately. This is especially likely if she has also been coughing or sneezing. She could also be experiencing a corneal ulcer which is a scratch across the surface of her eye. More serious conditions include inadequate tear production or a change in pressure in her eyes. Her veterinarian will perform an eye exam and then some tests to differentiate between these conditions. From there, appropriate treatment can be prescribed. Green discharge generally indicates infection. I recommend tonhave little Cinni examined by her veterinarian today if possible. Wipe the excess discharge away gently with a warm moistened cottenball. She may have an infection or a scratch on the cornea. You must also make sure she does not rub it as this will make it worse. An elizabethan collar worn at all times will protect her eye. This is a sign of conjunctivitis. It may have developed from allergies or an eye irritant like smoke or pollen. You can wipe the discharge from the eyes with a warm wet cloth, and use sterile eye drops to flush out the discharge. Since the discharge is pussy Pepper has an infection that would clear up more quickly with prescription eye ointment. I recommend an exam with your veterinarian. They will examine the eyes and may stain them to check for a corneal injury and also will check to see if Pepper has normal tear production. Dogs with dry eyes can be more prone to conjunctivitis. I'm sorry your pup isn't feeling well. He needs to be check for an ulcer or scratch of his cornea- he needs to see a vet for that. You can rinse with contact solution and if no improvement in 12 hours, I would take him to the vet. Good luck and kisses to your pup!

Since Poppy has been having this problem for awhile, it would be a good idea to have your vet examine the eye to determine the cause. She could have an infection, dry eye, corneal ulcer/scratch, allergies, etc. Your vet can look at her eye and run some tests, if needed, to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat. The eye lids appear very red and with the history of the runny eye discharge with a sudden onset, there could be a scratch on the cornea or a foreign object trapped under the eye lid. An allergic reaction is also possible. Corneal scratches and foreign objects in the eye are uncomfortable and can get worse quickly.
