My dog has anal gland infection symptoms. Vets closed, what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 56 lbs

My dog is displaying signs that she has an anal gland infection but most Vets are closed til Monday for the holiday season. I’ve been using Peroxide & Benadryl cream to relieve some of the irritation (only occurs after she poops) and it helps with the fishy smell... what should be done til I can get antibiotics from a Vet? Please help don’t want infection getting worse. Thanks

Anal glands live at 5 and 7 o’clock or so, not at 12 o’clock like you have circled. However other problems such as perianal dermatitis can be causing signs as well. Using warm water and Epsom salts to compress the area can be helpful to decrease irritation and pain. Here is an article about Benadryl use in dogs : https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/ I hope this will keep him comfortable until you can get him to a veterinarian. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
