My Dachshund won't use his back leg. Should I go to the vet now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 7 years and 10 months old | 14 lbs

My miniature Dachshund has not been putting any weight on his back left leg since Wednesday evening. He was in his kennel with our other two Dachshunds. He doesn't seem to be in any pain. I think it's a luxated patella since it seems he has all the symptoms but he's never had any issues. I just need to know if it's an emergency or if I can want til Monday morning to call our vet. They're closed today. Is this something he needs to be seen for immediately?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Bob. You could be correct with your assumption. Small breeds often have patellar problems in one or both knees due to anatomical problems with their knees. The other concern I would have is a cruciate ligament injury. Another possibility would be other soft tissue injuries or injuries to the bones of the leg. This can be assessed by your vet when you take Bob for an exam. Your vet may want to sedate Bob to fully assess the knee and take x-rays. I think you can probably wait but if his pain level increases to the point of him not eating, then I would advise that you take him today or this weekend. Once a diagnosis is made, a sound treatment plan can be implemented.
