My senior cat is suddenly coughing with her tongue out and black.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 14 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

Adopted a 14 year old Siamese from the shelter two months ago. Tonight she has had two coughing fits with her tongue sticking out, very upsetting. I think her tongue is black too. She has Feline Herpes I was told.

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection (inflammatory, allergic, infective). Allergic bronchitis/feline asthma could be one of the possible differentials as well. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
