My 17-year-old cat is declining after a steroid shot. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 17 years and 7 months old | 9 lbs

My cat just received a steroid shot three days ago and has been declining since. She is listless, hiding, and not eating. She received the shot for chrinic bronchitis. She was diagnosed 6 weeks ago and was difficult to pill so the vet suggested the steroid shot. She is 17 years old. Can a steroid shot kill my cat?

There are different types of steroid shots. Long term use or high doses can affect their liver or kidneys. There has been studies that some forms can bring on a form of heart failure if already underlying with it. The do make asthma inhalers for cats that may be easier to give. If she is not eating I would have her rechecked to have blood work done and see what else is going on
