My hedgehog's eye is swollen and irritated. Is it a vet emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 1 day old

I recently adopted my first hedgehog. I knew he breeder was kinda sketchy, it was an "accidental litter" kinda deal, but I wanted him out of that home ASAP. Anyway, before I got him she said he had no health issues. When we got him we noticed his eyes were two different sizes and one seemed irritated. One was swollen. I washed him and rinsed the eye and it looks better now. Should I wait a day or two to see if it will be okay or should I schedule something with my vet now?

Any potential eye infection or injury should be considered veterinary emergencies. Atticus should be examined by your veterinarian, a veterinary ophthalmologist or at the nearest veterinary ER as soon as you can. Ideally, any new pet should be examined by a veterinarian within 72 hours of arriving home to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any pre existing conditions.
