My dog's paw pad is cracked open. How can I protect it until the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years old | 38 lbs

I noticed last night one of his foot pads is very cracked open. He was chewing at it. It was the first time I have noticed it and he doesn’t seem to limp or be bothered by it right now. But it is pretty split and I don’t think I can get a bandage on it. I have an appointment Sunday but that was the first available. I’m not sure what to do in the mean time. I can try to get in tomorrow as a walk in. I don’t have an e collar and he will eat a sock off.

I would recommend going to Petco or Petsmart and get a bootie for Bradley. This will help him so he doesn't lick at it and keeps it clean. If you can call tomorrow and see if they can fit you in that would be better then Sunday. The biggest thing is keeping the pad clean and making sure that Bradley doesn't lick at his foot. With the photos the cut doesn't look too deep but your veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics and anti-inflammatories (for pain) to Bradley to make him more comfortable. Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
