Dog's recurring ear infections and eye discharge: What's the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed

Hi, My 1 year old American bulldog has been having ear infections. I've taken her to the vets and they prescribed us ear drops, the infection cleans up nice but always seems to come back. Apparently this is common for dogs with larger flappy ears, but i've noticed her one eye seems to get stuck on the 'inner skin' of her eye from time to time which also leaves some discharge but not always. Her eye looks healthy and clear when I check it. Is there anything I could do to help? Thank you.

I would not say that ear infections are common on floppy ear dogs. Some dogs will get ear infections every few years but other dogs will get them often. Typically if a dog has ear infections often it is secondary to an underlying issue like allergies. The most common type of allergies are food, environmental and flea. Until the allergy is regulated the ear infections usually will not resolve or lessen in frequency. It is possible an underlying allergy is also causing eye discharge. I would recommend talking with your vet about working through the allergy issues. I hope that helps
