Why does my cat get recurring painful pus-filled skin infections?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

My short hair cat often gets pus filled pockets on his body, that are filled with yellow/white/brown fluid. These spots are often very sore and swollen but are not warn nor is any hair loss involved. Often, within 48hrs a small scab will form which can be removed for drainage. He has been getting these the whole 4 yrs of his life. Any ideas?

These are skin infections that you are describing. For a cat to get these regularly indicates that his immune system is not working properly. For this to be happening all of his life, I would be most suspicious of an FIV or FeLV infection. For more information about FIV/FeLV, see the link below: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/Health_Information/CW_FeLV.cfm There are other, more rare conditions that could cause him to get these infections, but diagnosing them may take a fair amount of testing by your veterinarian. Either way, I recommend you schedule a consult with a veterinarian. They would be able to better evaluate Parker's lesions and help narrow down the cause of this. It's definitely possible that this condition can be successfully treated. I hope that helps and Parker gets better soon.
