What happens if my dog ate something and it stays in her stomach?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 months and 17 days old | 15 lbs

Athena ate her travel cage on Sunday. She ate two holes big enough for her body to get out of ( she weighs 40 pounds). Well she hasn’t been eating well so I took her to the vet, they did an X-ray and found something in her stomach but was not 100% sure it’s the cloth from the cage. They want to wait till friday to do another X-ray and if it is still there they want to do a scope. What would happen if I didnt get it out of her stomach?

It depends how large the piece is. If it is small and broken into bits, then it has the ability to pass on its own. If it leaves the stomach in a larger piece, then you are taking a risk and it may get obstruction and stuck in the intestines which can do more damage than being in the stomach. If she gets obstructed it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia, profound dehydration and weight loss. If it just stays in her stomach, not going anywhere, then it may cause a partial obstruction that can cause these signs intermittently.
