My cat injured her tail. Why is she licking a wound and twitching?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Female | spayed

About 10 days ago my 1 year old cat injured her tail at home - not sure how. It happenes. Initially she couldn't lift her tail up. The vet checked her and said that the tail is not broken and proscribed anti inflammatory medication for 5 days. She is fine now, active and can lift her tail up. However, she still licks her tall I noticed some laceration/wound (picture attached). The area does not seem painful but tip of her tail twitches when you touch it. I'm worried that she will need amputation

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Sky has been having issues with her tail. It does appear that she has a wound on her tail, either from the original injury or from something unrelated. It is difficult to tell from the picture whether or not the wound is extensive enough to need stitches, but it may need antibiotics to help prevent infection. I would recommend she be re-evaluated by her veterinarian to assess the severity of the wound, and if further treatment and/or antibiotics may be needed for it to heal. Good luck!
