Stray kitten found: How to quarantine before introducing to my cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi! I found a stray kitten at a drive thru, and because winter is coming and he seems incredibly skinny I want to make him a pet. He seems skittish but is quickly warming up to me. Can I quarantine him in my house when I catch him or would that be dangerous for other cat? Should I try to take him directly to a vet? I've been feeding him for about two weeks now and last time I visited he came out as soon as I called his name and let me sit with him while he ate.

It would be prudent to keep him separated from your cat until he is examined by your veterinarian. The kitten should be dewormed, given flea medication if necessary and vaccinated before he is introduced to your cat. A blood test for FeLV and FIV is also recommended.
