My parakeet is shaking and not moving her bent foot. What's wrong?

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I can see that Baby is missing a toe nail and that the toe is swollen. There is a little bit of caked on feces, but the toe itself is swollen. It is also concerning that the nail has come off and that the toe itself is somewhat gray, as this can be a sign of necrosis, or tissue death. This may have been caused by increased pressure on the foot, so you should definitely try to keep a variety of perches in the cage. This may have been due to trauma from Baby's previous environment, so you should keep a close eye on the area, and have her seen by a vet if the gray color begins to spread. I hope all is well!

Hopefully your bird just injured her toe nail and is a little sore. However, she may have fractured a bone in her foot when she became stuck. It is possible she injured it in transit to the store or at the store. If there is no active bleeding, you can keep an eye on it. If she appears sensitive or painful, have her examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet. You can also return her to the Petco for treatment or exchange.

A visit to the veterinarian would be prudent to diagnosis infection or injury. It is possible she may have caught it on the cage, in a toy or food bowl. Check her toenails as well. If they are too long, it can make moving and perching difficult or uncomfortable.

Based on the symptoms you are describing I would be concerned that the bird is either not getting enough nutrition or that he has aspirated some of the food and now is developing pneumonia. My best recommendation for you is to have your bird examined by an avian veterinarian. If your bird did aspirate he will need some antibiotics to help with the infection.
