My dog suddenly has accidents when I leave. Is it separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 50 lbs

I have a 1 year old bull terrier pit mix. he was potty trained and now all of a sudden he keeps doing his “business” inside, but only when I leave the house for whatever amount of time, could be 30 minutes at the grocery store. Could this be seperation anxiety? What can I do to prevent this?

It may be related to your absence. You can reinforce crate training. Walk him before you go out. Get him acclimated to your absence as well. Do this by preparing to leave several times daily. Leave sometimes and other times prepare to leave but then stay. Go out for ever increasing periods of time. Do not make a big deal when leaving or arriving. Use a special toys or treat as a distraction when you go. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, may decrease any anxiety.
