My cat is biting his tail due to a bump. Does he need antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 8 months old | 20 lbs

My 2yr old male cat has been hissing/growling/biting his tail. I've inspected the area and found a small bump, long and oval shaped, about the size of a sunflower seed out of the shell. Noticed some dry blood droplets matted in his fur. He's very sensitive in that area. I've cleaned his tail a few times with dawn and have been spraying Vetericyn Plus/ antimicrobial hydrogel on it. Does he need antibiotics? Any thoughts?

Place an e-collar (cone) on Baxter to prevent further licking or chewing. He would need to be physically examined by your veterinarian to determine if antibiotics would be indicated. Keep the area clean and dry. If Baxter allows, gently clean the area to get a better look. Your vet can shave the area if necessary and could perform a fine needle aspirate in the clinic to collect samples of the lump for pathology. Once results are in, options for treatment can be discussed.
