My dog has kidney disease, won't eat renal food, shaking. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 9 lbs

My dog recently was told he has renal issues and was put in s renal diet. He has pooped and peed normal everyday. He’s always had an upset stomach so when he tries new food he usually gets sick. He wouldn’t keep the renal food down, it’s come right back up. So today since he was starving for 2 days and throwing up we gave him his normal food and he kept that down. Now he’s starting to act a little better but he currently has been shaking, and rubbing his head on the ground and paws.

Hello, sorry to hear about Tobey. It could be that he is allergic to the protein in his new food and this may need to be addressed by your veterinarian. There are other diets low in protein used in patients with kidney disease that you and your veterinarian could explore for Tobey. Alternatively, you may consult with a nutritionist to develop a balanced diet for him. In the interim, it would be fine to continue his old diet if he tolerates that better while you arrange to try a different diet for Tobey. Hope this helps and best of luck.
