My dog is losing fur. Is it a Neurontin (Gabapentin) side effect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 70 lbs

Can 300mg of Neurontin cause hair loss in dogs? My lab mix has been on it for spondylosis for the last 4 months. She seems to be losing her fur, bottom coat and top coat at an alarming rate! She is a 75 lb lab/golden mix, 9 years old. Thanks!

I have never hear of gabapentin (neurontin) causing this type of side effect however, I have learned to "never say never" in this profession. So, is it possible? Sure. Is it likely? I don't think so. Here is a link to an article about gabapentin and side effects in dogs. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2764 All of that being said, are you talking about excessive shedding or actual alopecia (bald spots)? If it is just excessive shedding with no bald patches or other clinical signs I would not worry about it. If she seems to have other clinical signs then I would suggest you take her back to your vet for a recheck exam. Hope this helps. If you have more questions feel free to post again.

Alopecia is not a side effect of this medication. I would recommend having Sasha tested for thyroid disease as a possible cause and also having the skin tested if indicated. Best of luck to you in finding out the cause of her hair loss. Best wishes and take care.
