Does demodectic mange affect my rescue dog's long-term immune system?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male

I’ve been offered a rescue male black Labrador 9 months old. It had been vet checked and immunised, dewormed etc. and is generally healthy. However he has demodectic mange and I am unclear as to whether this indicates that generally his health is likely to be poor long term (suppressed immune system etc). Any advice would be welcome in terms of how we could establish the long term health outlook for such a dog.

He sounds like a great dog! Demodectic mange is easy to treat. I don't find that it means that their general immune system is affected at all. It is just to this one mite. I don't see it associated with other immune system problems. They may have problems with demodex again when they are geriatric, but I only saw that rarely (associated with other diseases). There is no guarantee for any animal's health, but I would certainly not consider demdodex as a deal breaker. I would adopt a demdodex dog if it was the right fit for my family!
