Should I use a rubber band to remove a skin tag from my dog's belly?

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Thank you for the pictures. Sadly I do not think the growth is a skin tag. I don't like the color or the bubble protuberance. It still could be benign but it doesn't have the typical skin tag appearance. I would have it removed and biopsied. I wish you and Bam the best!

That is not something you can do at home as it probably has a good blood supply and will bleed a lot if not surgically removed. This shouldn’t be an emergency procedure so I recommend getting an estimate for the growth removal and saving up to get it done soon. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Caine.

I'm actually concerned with how it looks, and it may be he's been scratching at it so much it's ripped open. This definitely needs to be checked out by a vet. Give his vet a call now to make him an appointment. Until you get into the vet, I'd put a bandage over it to protect it and keep him from scratching at it. I hope this helps!

Hello. You are correct, this is a skin tag, but a bit bigger than a tag. At this point, you have a pedunculated mass. About 99% of these are totally benign, but we do recommend removal just because they can continue to grow & become traumatized. Removal is curative. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It always COULD be cancer - the only way to diagnose for sure is to remove it and send it to the lab. But I doubt it based on its current appearance. FAR more likely is that it’s a completely harmless “skin tag”. I’m not surprised at the color; even though her fur is fawn, you can see that Gracie’s actual skin is blackish in that area. Keep an eye on it. If it becomes suddenly big, hard, or seems to bother Gracie, get it checked out. Best of luck to you and Gracie!

I would not recommend using the liquid bandage product as it could cause further irritation. If you want to bandage this, then I would suggest using medical tape and gauze pads to keep it covered. If surgery is not an option you may want to look into cryotherapy to have the skin masses removed. This is a non-invasive way of removing small tumors. It is not always effective but is a good option if surgical removal is not an option for you. I would recommend using zymox topical ointment on any of the open masses so that they do not become secondarily infected. I hope this helps! No, it's absolutely not OK to cut it off as you cannot know for sure what it might be connected to. Take him to the vet to have it looked at and if it needs to be removed it will most probably be done under sedation.

Hello. Skin tags are rarely dangerous to the pet, but can become a nuisance. They can get snagged, irritated & torn so yes, it is really worth the very, very small risk to remove one. It should be a relatively quick procedure & very little down time, other than caring for the area while the skin heals. Once the stiches or staples come out, the skin tag will never come back in the same area. So if Taurie seems bothered by it now, have it removed while she is young & the tag is relatively small. Hi and thank you for reaching out about Roxy. The pictures you have provided for Roxy appear to be benign "skin tags" ("skin warts"). They do not cause Roxy any pain and generally are not a problem for dogs. The treatments you have asked about/mentioned will not remove them. Her fur coat looks very healthy and these skin tags generally do not cause any problems. If you would like them removed it must be safely done with a very small surgical removal performed by her veterinarian. Otherwise, we usually have you continue to monitor them at home unless they start to bother Roxy.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
