My dachshund's breath is terrible after tooth surgery. Is it infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | unneutered | 15 lbs

My dachshund was hit by a car and his upper canine tooth was broken in half basically ... he ended up having surgery to remove the rest of the tooth that was stuck in the jaw. After the surgery which was about 2 months ago, his breath smelled great! Well about a month ago his breath started stinking again and it's TERRIBLE. I've been watching the jawline to see if it's swollen but it isn't. It does look nasty though and kinda looks like dead skin. Wondering if there is infection? No $$$ now

It could be infection or unrelated periodontal disease. Dabo will need to be rechecked by your veterinarian to confirm either diagnosis. Antibiotics may be indicated. A dental cleaning may also be indicated along with dental xrays to evaluate all the teeth below the gum line. Discuss payment plans or alternative financing options, such as CareCredit (www.carecredit.com) with your veterinarian. Ask friends and family if they can assist you financially. Crowd funding or local charities may also provide financial assistance. Red Rover (www.redrover.org) is also another option for financial assistance.
