Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry that Rifle has been coughing and itching. The two can be related (for example, with allergies) or they can be caused by two separate conditions. The cough can be caused by various infections (such as bacteria, viruses, or even some parasites such as heart worms), heart disease, lung disease, or many other conditions. Because a cough can have so many causes, it is important to have Rifle examined by a vet. Blood work and X-rays and possibly some other tests will help determine a diagnosis. As far as Rifle's skin goes, the itching and odor can be caused by bacterial and yeast infections, but can be exacerbated by fleas, mites, allergies, and several other conditions. While bathing him once a week can definitely help with the itch, it is important to have an exact diagnosis to treat him correctly. He may need antibiotics, a medicated shampoo, or even a change in diet to help his skin get better. The fact that he is crying out may mean that he is in pain, which can be caused by the self-inflicted trauma as he scratches. However, many other conditions can cause pain, and it important to have him seen by a vet. I hope Rifle starts feeling better soon!
