Why does my dog have bumpy, crusted skin on her chest?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Female | spayed | 17.2 lbs

Hi While petting my Westie on her chest between her front legs, I noticed some bumpiness - I thought it was matted hair. I took a photo and am not sure what it is on her skin and should I be concerned or how to treat etc?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see a yellow, crusted area under the haircoat. This can be caused by several bacterial or fungal diseases as well as mites. There are many underlying diseases that can predispose dogs to these conditions such as hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, food allergies, and immunosuppression. It is important to have Marley examined by a veterinarian who can perform tests to diagnose the condition and rule out any underlying disease. In the meantime, try to keep the area clean and dry and prevent her from licking or scratching it. I hope this helps!

This appears to be some crusting of the skin. This is often seen with skin infections, skin irritation, or fleas/mites. The skin can also become inflamed like this if Marley is getting bathed inappropriately (more frequently than once a month, or with products that are not labeled for dogs). If you cannot readily identify the cause of this, then I recommend taking Marley to the vet for an evaluation. We can often find the underlying cause quickly and can give the appropriate medication to keep this from getting worse. I hope that helps and all is well with Marley.
