Praferan dosage for kittens? Deworming frequency & cat vaccines?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 24 days old | 5.89 lbs

How much of the Praferan tablet should I give my 5 month old kittens who are 5.27lbs and 5.89lbs if they've never been dewormed before and how often? They haven't been vaccinated yet, can you tell me the generic names of the injections they need to get?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! We do not use that dewormer in the US. Both kittens should get 1/4 tablet and repeat in 4 weeks. This is from Amazon: Praferan® Anthelminth 50 TABLETS 1 tablet per 10 kg (22 lbs) / once every 3 months Product Information: For the treatment and control of the most common intestinal worms: Tapeworms, Roundworms, Whipworm, Hookworms Benefits: - Proven to eradicate the most common intestinal parasites - An easy single-dose administration. - Can be given directly by mouth or in a small amount of food. - Side effects occur very rare as of use Praziquantel e.g. vomiting, anorexia and diarrhoea. But no serious consequences. The combined tablet formulation provides a wide spectrum of activity against the indicated species of intestinal helminths. 1 TABLET CONTAINS : Pyrantel Pamoate equivalent to Pyrantel 144 mg Febantel 150 mg Praziquantel 50 mg Dosage Charts: 1.5 - 2.5 KG (3.3 - 5.5 lbs) = 1/4 TABLET 3 - 5 KG (6.6 - 11 lbs) = 1/2 TABLET 5 - 7 KG (11 - 15.4 lbs) = 3/4 TABLET 7 - 10KG (15.4 - 22 lbs) = 1 TABLET 11 - 15 KG (24.2 - 33 lbs) = 1 1/2 TABLETS 16 - 20 KG (35.2 - 44 lbs) = 2 TABLETS 21 - 25 KG (46.3 - 55 lbs) = 2 1/2 TABLETS ***NOT FOR USE IN PUPPIES LESS THAN 3 WEEKS OF AGE OR DOGS WEIGHING LESS THAN 2 LBS*** Deworming Recommendations: - Puppies and kittens at age 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age and then monthly until 6 months of age. - For routine control adult dogs should be treated every 3-6 months. In the event of a heavy roundworm infestation, a repeat dose should be given after 14 days. - Overdose; this product has a high index of safety and can hardly be an overdose in dogs and cats. There is no danger of death. - Do not use in pregnant pets Treat at mating and after whelping at least 2 weeks. Cats need the FVRCP vaccine, meaning it contains Feline Rhinotrachitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia. They should get 2 vaccines, 4 weeks apart if over 12 weeks of age. The rabies vaccine, in the US, is given by Vets. I hope this helps

The dosing for Praferan is one tablet for every 22 pounds of body weight. So, you would need to cut one tablet into 4 equal pieces (quarters) and give each kitten one of those pieces. I would deworm them now at least every 3 months if they are going to be going outdoors. If they will be indoor only then once or twice a year should suffice. Here is information about cat vaccines in Pakistan. Since I am in the United States it is difficult for me to tell you what your country requires. If this article does not clarify I suggest you contact your local vet for more information. https://petsone.pk/vaccination-schedule-for-kittens-and-adult-cats/ Hope this helps. Best wishes.
