My cockatiel won't bathe. Will he get mites if I don't force him?

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male

My new cockateil isnt taking bath and I have to force him to bath. One of the experts from Petco Pet Education Center advised not to force him and he will take bath if he wants. But I think it will take weeks for him to bath by himself. But if I don't force him, won't he start getting mites if he doesn't bath for weeks?

I would agree that you do not want to force your bird to bathe because it may cause him undue stress and anxiety. Try encouraging him to bathe more frequently by using his favorite treats as a reward. You should not have to worry about mites unless there is a source of infection that your bird comes into contact with on a regular basis (most commonly another infected bird). I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
