What vaccinations does my adult rescue dog need and how to get them?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I recommend contacting a local veterinarian in your area to have Venom seen for a "new puppy" appointment. At this appointment, the veterinarian will perform an exam, and can make recommendations for first vaccines, flea, tick and heartworm preventatives, as well as appropriate diet and socialization. Dogs require both "distemper" (DAPP) vaccines as well as rabies vaccines. These are the two core vaccines for dogs. These need to be boostered (given again) in 3-4 weeks following the first shot. There are other vaccines such as lyme and leptospirosis that can be considered depending on Venom's potential exposure. I hope this is helpful!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco and congrats on the new baby! I do not recommend starting the distemper/parvo vaccines until 6-8 weeks of age. They should be repeated every 3-4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age. The rabies vaccine is usually given between 12 and 16 weeks of age. Best of luck to you and Oreo!

Hello. In general, a dog should be routinely vaccinated for canine distemper, parvo, adenovirus, parainfluenza, leptospirosis, rabies & sometimes bordatella. Hello, Oso should be vaccinated with a Distemper, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Hepatitis, and coronavirus. Additionally, he should also be vaccinated for rabies and bordetella. He will need 3 booster shots of the first combo vaccine, a booster of his bordetella, and repeat booster of all of these when he is 1 year of age. Hope this helps and best of luck.

He is quite handsome. It looks like he is due for his distemper/parvo vaccine and Bordetella vaccine. He will be due for his rabies at the beginning of March. In order to keep all of his vaccines together, I would go ahead and have all of his vaccines updated before having him groomed. I hope this helps!

Hello! For starters, she should have "core" vaccines - DAPP and Rabies. DAPP (distemper/parvo) - Since she is an adult, a single DAPP vaccine will be sufficient for at least 1 year. After 1 year, your vet may recommend checking titers ( a blood test to check for immunity) rather than re-vaccinating after only 1 year. Or, your vet may feel comfortable with considering that single vaccine a 3 year vaccine, or may recommend a booster after 1 year. Rabies- a 1 year Rabies should be given. Another rabies vaccine needs to be given after 1 year..... that 2nd rabies vaccine can be a 3 year vaccine. Beyond that, talk to your vet. Further vaccination recommendations are based on what is of greatest concern in your area, and on what her lifestyle is like. Congratulations on adopting Rico! Since he has not yet had vaccines, you can start from square one. Rico should be examined by a veterinarian to evaluate his overall health and can then begin his vaccine series. He will need two DAPP (distemper-adenovirus-parvovirus-parainfluenza) vaccines spaced 3-4 weeks apart, as well as a rabies vaccine. In most areas of the country, it is often recommended to being a series of leptospirosis vaccines as well. In Lyme disease endemic areas, Lyme vaccines are often given. If Rico will be going to kennels, doggy daycare or dog parks, you can also discuss canine influenza and bordetella (kennel cough) vaccines with his vet.

Depending on your location and lifestyle, leptospirosis and influenza may be recommended as well. Without knowing prior vaccination history, some vaccines will require a booster in 3-4 weeks. Your dog will need several vaccines. Most veterinarians give a yearly combo vaccine that includes distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and Corona (DHPPC). He will also need his Rabies vaccine. Rabies can now be given every three years after the initial 1 year vaccine. Other vaccines that I recommend are Canine Bordetella vacine (kennel cough) that is given every 6 or 12 months, and a Leptospirosis vaccine (this vaccine can be added to the combo vaccine or given alone). If your veterinarian offers a Lymes disease vaccine (probably means lymes is prevelant in your area), it would be a good idea to get that one as well.
