My old dog's tongue sticks out after dental surgery. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

My 14 yr old terrier mix male can not stop sticking his tongue out. Like licking the roof of his mouth action. My vet of 48 years has never seen this before. He has had several teeth removed, and now my vet has put my dog on Prozac. Could this be neurological ?

Depending on which teeth and how many are removed it is not uncommon for some dogs to not be able to keep their tongue in after extractions. This can also be a nervous behavior or a sign of nausea. It is unlikely neurological if there are no other signs such as difficulty swallowing or blinking or any changes in facial symmetry
