Why does my older dog bite when I pick him up? Is he in pain?

When ever I try to pick my beagle up he tries to bite me. Why? He is a little old could that be it? Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 10 months old

I am suspicious that it may be painful for him when you pick him up. Back pain can be hard to see but when you manipulate the back by picking him up is when you may see the most pain.
