My cat has a painful anal sore and is straining. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 12 years and 10 months old | 10 lbs

My cat has a big sore near her anus. We didint see or notice anything till this morning. Any type of touch on her back hip area causes her to flinch and hiss. Her breathing has picked up pace a bit. She keeps going into a bathroom position but nothing is coming out. Wondering what the sore is and how do I go from here?

That dark discoloration implies that top skin no longer has blood supply and it is not healthy tissue. This is likely an abscess from an injury or previous bite wound. Typically they can heal on their own, but the bacteria get trapped and cause this. She will need to see a vet for further treatment as that spot may have to be surgically removed and the area cleaned and flushed out. Antibiotics need to be given to maintain control of the infection so it can heal. These areas are very painful so any touching or straining is not recommend.
