My dog's lip has a growing bubble. Should I drain it or see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Female | spayed | 4 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

My 4 yr old miniature pinscher, her lip turned pink in one spot about 3 weeks ago and in that time it has grown to a somewhat large and hard bubble\abcess. I'm not sure if I should try and puncture it to let fluid out? Should I use a sterilized needle to try and drain it? What steps should I take to help her. She had been scratching it more the last few days as it has grown as large as my pinky nail.

I would recommend take Fynn to a veterinarian. If it is painful for her tehy may lance it but will also provide antibiotics and pain medications while it heals. The concern is if you lance it at home and introduce bacteria it can really become infected. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
