My pet is extremely thirsty after vomiting. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

She seems to be drinking way more water than usual. She did throw up sometime yesterday, but has since been able to hold her food down for over 12 hours. Just noticing she seems extremely thirsty, but otherwise seems normal. Do I need to be worried, or is she just thirsty due to throwing up?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Maggie! I think it would helps us to know how old Maggie is? I would take Maggie to the Vet Monday and have an exam and full blood work ran (T4 and urine too). Causes of extreme increased thirst are: diabetes, kidney failure, liver disease, increased calcium, cancer and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). I don't think Maggie is drinking excessively due to one episode of vomiting. I am glad she is eating and no longer throwing up. I hope this helps and I wish Maggie the best!
