My young dog has a head lump. Is it a histiocytoma or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 60 lbs

I am concerned that my dog may have a histiocytoma based on what I've read it appears to be the most accurate description of what he has. He is an American bulldog, 9 almost 10 months old. It has only been on his head for possibly 1 month. What steps should be taken or should I monitor it for 3 months.

A Histiocytoma is the most likely type of a mass based on Jaxson's age. Rarely these masses can turn out to be a Mast Cell Tumor or Plasmacellcytoma. If it is a Histiocytoma, it should resolve within 2-3 months. I think if you want to be on the safe side, have the mass aspirated by Jaxson's veterinarian. Mast Cell tumors are not common in young dogs but I have personally seen it in a 7 months old rat terrier. Otherwise, if does not resolve within 3 months, then have it aspirated. The only risk is that IF it is a Mast Cell Tumor, you've already waited 3 months, I hope this helps!
