My cat on Atopica has diarrhea. How can I help and how long?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 years and 8 months old | 15 lbs

My cat just started on Atopica again, he was on it previously. The initial dosage says he needs it daily, then every other day. Since he started taking it a week ago he has developed diarrhea. Still eating and drinking ok, sleeps alot. He is 13 and weighs 15lbs. What can I do to help the diarrhea, how long will this last, can we go to every other day right now? When he was on it previously he got it every 3rd day and it worked great.

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I sorry Buddha (love the name!) is experiencing some diarrhea. Sometimes this can be a side effect of medications, including Atopica. Probiotics and extra fiber can help lessen diarrhea if it is a side effect of the medication. I'd recommended Proviable or FortiFlora for a probiotic and plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) for an extra fiber boost on top of his food daily. Diarrhea from Atopica may be transient, lasting only a few days, or sometimes for a few weeks. I would recommended asking Buddha's veterinarian about the dosing change. I cannot legally give advice on drug dosing over the internet. I hope this helps and thanks again for your post!
