My cat has a belly bulge or pouch. Is it normal or concerning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 months and 3 days old | 3 lbs

I recently noticed that my cat has a kind of bulge on her lower belly, almost like a pouch. It just hangs down low enough to touch the ground when she sits on her hind legs. It's pretty difficult to take a picture of because the fur blends. Should I be worried? Could it be an edema?

Many cats will develop a fat pad in their abdominal area, but Bean is a bit young for this. If the area is not hard, swollen or painful, then I would not be too concerned. Just have it looked at by your veterinarian at your earliest convenience. Take care & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Overweight cats can have fat pads on their belly near the groin area so it could just be normal. It could also possibly be a hernia, enlarged lymph nodes, etc so have him examined by a vet to determine the exact cause.
