Why is my cat having trouble closing his mouth and his tongue is out?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | 11 years and 4 months old | 20 lbs

I have an 11 year old male Maine Coon who seems to be having difficulty getting his mouth closed . His tongue seems to be out a little as well. I’ve noticed this past little while that he seemed to have trouble with his jaw but when l’d get closer to look, he was okay. I’m really getting worried about him, is there anything you can recommend? We just moved this past year from the province of Newfoundland, Canada to the province of Ontario, I don’t have a local vet yet? I’ve attached pictures,

Hi there. There could be a couple things going on with Jake. He could have a growth in his mouth or on his gums that is preventing him from closing his mouth. He could also have pain or something else going on in his TMJ joint which makes it uncomfortable for him to fully clothes his jaw. I would recommend you taking him to the vet for them to examine him and they may need to take an x-ray. They can then determine what is the next best step. Best wishes and thanks for using Pet Coach!
