How to stop my Border Collie from dangerously chasing cars for good?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 48.9 lbs

Arlo is a border collie that chases cars. He gets fixated on them. It means we have to drive to walkies so my little boy and I don't get pulled into the road. It's getting to the point that it's really dangerous now, even with a halti he still does it. Any ideas?

You can set up a situation with some friends to discourage Arlo from chasing cars. Have them go by with a driver, and a passenger behind the driver. As Arlo gets close to the car, have the passenger squirt him in the face. You might have to add a little bit of hot sauce, lemon juice or vinegar to the water. This may have to be repeated several times, with different cars, until Arlo gets the idea that chasing cars is no longer fun. Recognizing that a Border Collie naturally chases things, it is still possible to train him not to so that you don't have to resort to the suggestion above. If he is food motivated, you might try distracting him with food as a car approaches and rewarding him for leaving it alone. If he has not been to an obedience class, I would strongly suggest that as well. If you have further questions, you can click on the prompt to inititate a consult. Good luck with this!
