How long to keep a bandage on my cat's wound? Should I let it breathe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 12 days old | 2 lbs

So my new cat has this very big open wound that I’ve been putting petroleum jelly on a long with gauze and wrap. It does seem to be getting better but, my question is how long should I keep the wrap on? I change it about twice to three times a day but do I take it off to “let it breath” or not let her lick it? I’ve been moving her head away so she won’t lick it.

Ouch, poor Kora! That is quite a large wound on her leg. You are doing the right thing by changing the wrap a couple of times a day, and I would keep the wound protected and covered until the wound itself starts to close. You need to keep it clean and dry, and keep her from licking at it. I would also have her seen by a vet for it. There is a potential that a wound this big may not heal at all or could become infected, and it really needs to be evaluated by a vet. I would take her into the vet on Monday. I hope this helps!
