My parakeet lost a tail feather. Is this normal parakeet molting?

I have two parakeets, today one of the parakeet lost one of his/her tail feather. Is it normal.

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is absolutely normal for parakeets to occasionally shed their feathers, even the larger feathers from the tail. However, since it sounds like there are two birds housed together, I recommend keeping an eye their overall appearance and have them evaluated by a vet if there are any large featherless patches.

This could just be normal molting or shedding of old feathers to grow in new ones. If new feathers aren’t coming in (usually seen as pin feathers) then there could be a problem. As feathers get older, they lose some of their function so they are replaced by new ones. In most species, this occurs one to two times per year. Where things become concerning is when a bird is losing their feathers between molting times. When this happens, it can be due to illness or to behavioral problems. It my be normal molting and feathers will come in soon. It could also be indicative of infection or nutritional deficiency. Have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating birds to diagnose illness or injury. Review the diet to make sure it is balanced and biologically appropriate. Provide a cage large enough to prevent rubbing of the tail and wings against the bars as Peter moves around. Bathe or mist him several times weekly with warm water (NO soap) to promote healthy plumage.

It is possible Penny is molting. This is normal and is the process of losing old feathers while new ones grow in. You may see pin feathers, or small feathers that look like little pins sticking out of the skin as they grow. It often looks like a mess because some birds tend to lose a lot of feathers all at once, while others have a slower, gradual molt. As long as she is otherwise healthy and active, making sure she is on a balanced diet to ensure good feather growth is best. If she seems ill or new feathers are not growing in, it could indicate she is ill, has some mites, or another skin condition which should be checked out by a vet.

My bird is cocktail and is shredding so many feathers. Is it something to concern about ?
If Bobo is otherwise happy and healthy, he could just be molting. This is a normal thing that happens when your bird sheds their old feathers and replaces them with new ones. You will likely see "pin" feathers, or feathers that look like little pins sticking out of the skin in the places where old feathers were lost if this is the case.
If, however, Bobo is itching, there is redness, new feathers aren't growing in, or he seems ill or upset, it could indicate something else such as parasites, skin issues, etc, that should be checked out by a vet.

Hello doctor my green parrot 1 ND half months old his feather is falling down..it's causes any dieseas..
It may be that he is just starting to get his adult feathers and as such is losing the baby "down" which you may be seeing. If he's acting otherwise healthy and normal, and you see small pointy "things" poking from the skin, then it is likely his adult feathers starting to come in.
If he's itching and scratching a lot and losing large feathers, looking for causes such as parasites or infection is best. You may see redness on the skin, flecks of "stuff" under the feathers, or other irritation. A mite spray can help with parasites, however if you see visible wounds or discharge it is best to have a vet take a look. Making sure your bird is on a balanced diet can also help make sure his feathers regrow in healthy.

Thanks for reaching out about Rio. Rarely is the loss of feathers a life-threatening concern. Trauma, stress, nutritional deficiencies, and some viral diseases can cause feathers to fall out easily. If the problems persist, as feathers continue to fall out, a veterinary visit is needed. Correct any dietary deficiencies as birds can not live well on seeds. Good luck.

Hello! My budgie just lost her longest tail feather, but the feather is missing the calamus. This is the second one that has fallen out like that and no others have grown in its place. Why could this have happened? Thank you!
Thanks for the picture and reaching out about Kore. This could be either a fractures feather, possibly weakened by a nutritional deficiency. Protein and several vitamin and minerals are important for feather strength and integrity. Check to see if the calamus is still in place inside the follicle. Usually the birds will chew it and work it out. Another possible condition is one of a few viral diseases that can damage feathers. If the condition continues, a veterinary visit is recommended.

Nutrition deficiencies, metabolic disorders (liver, renal), hypothyroidism and other endocrine problems, all must be considered. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Review and discuss diet with the veterinarian during the visit. Good luck.

Stress and diet can both contribute to feather health and coloring. As long as your bird is behaving normally otherwise, there is likely no cause for concern. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, loose droppings or excessive feather loss (not due to molting). These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian.
