My dog has red, itchy, scabby skin. What's the next step for relief?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Akita | Male | neutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 89 lbs

My Dog has had red irritating skin. It is scabby and itchy. I've used itch sprays, topical creams, flea shampoo and drops. Apple cider vinegar, but this poor thing has no relief. Advice on what step to take next?

I hate to hear that Hachi is having so many problems. The 4 main things that will create skin conditions are food allergy, flea allergy, environmental allergy or thyroid problems. Each one will need to be hunted down to determine if it is the cause or not. You have tried many good, common sense therapies but it sounds like nothing is working. At this point I would recommend to contact your veterinarian and start figuring out why he is so itchy. Sometimes the physical exam alone can yield the answer. The doctor can also prescribe medications that will make Hachi more comfortable very quickly. There is a new drug Apoquel that many dogs respond very quickly too. You may try that. I hope this helps!
