Why is my old dog still weak and not eating after vet sedation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Brittany | Female | spayed | 25 lbs

I have a Brittany Spaniel that is at least 15 years old. We took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with a severe urinary tract infection. They kept her overnight and sedated her to do an ultrasound. When we picked her up, she was still totally out of it, and wouldn’t move for the rest of the day. It’s been three days, and she has gotten up on her own a couple times, but otherwise has no interest in food, and can barely stand. She was fine before she saw the vet. What can we do?

I would recommend having her seen by the veterinarian that performed the ultrasound for a recheck. If after 48 hours my patients are still sedated and not feeling well after I give them sedatives in the hospital, I want to see them for a physical examination just to make sure everything is ok. Every dog is different and depending on the sedatives used, could cause sedation for days after the drugs were given. My own dog used to take 72 hours to recover from a morphine injection so I have been in the same position as you. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
