Why is my dog suddenly not walking on her back legs and in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | 3 years and 1 month old

My dog is not walking on her back legs, she seems to be in a bit of pain. Not sure if the pain is coming from a lump that seems to be on her back or if it is in her legs, she had been fine before bed and just woke up this way, she hadn't been out side I havnt even seen her go to the toilet yet, she is still drinking and eating, the photo attached shows where the lump is, it's the dark patch, have never noticed her skin being that dark before. She is a toy poodle 3yo

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Phoebe! If Phoebe suddenly is unable to use her rear limbs this is an emergency. I doubt it is from the mass and could be from a slipped disk in her back. This is painful and can have neurologic signs: walking drunk, dragging legs, paresis or paralysis. If she loses deep pain in her legs the prognosis for return of motor function decreases. I recommend that Phoebe go to an emergency hospital or your Vet if open as soon as possible. I hope this helps and I wish Phoebe the best!
