Why is my cat peeing outside, drinking more, and has bloody urine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Kitty has no ketones and 250 blood glucose reading on a urine strip read. Temp 100.7, spayed, 12 year old female. Keeps peeing sometimes misses the litter box and is drinking more water. One tiny dot of blood in the middle of a clump of used litter with urine. Good appetite, alert, normal bowel movement. Can I get antibiotics on line if it is a uti if that is the diagnosis since cannot afford a vet right now? Can you help with a rx so can order meds on line with Drs Foster and Smith? Thanks!

Unfortunately you will not be able to just order an antibiotic online. This may not be a urinary tract infection and could be what we call a sterile cystitis. You could start by ensuring she is drinking plenty of water (recirculating water fountains help), switch to canned food and start a supplement called paxon or cranberry supplement treats for cats, which can be found online. If the symptoms are no better, the next step would be to have her seen by a veterinarian for testing and further treatment. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Hi, and thanks for your question. These signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver). Another clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics and possibly further investigations (like abdominal imaging as ultrasound or radiographs) may be needed. Hospitalization may be necessary for intensive treatment. This is likely a urinary tract infection and she should be seen by a veterinarian. Most UTIs in cats are caused by stress and do not require an antibiotic, however, in older cats bacteria are more often involved. You can get some Feliway spray to spray in your truck which will make your cat happier and takes away some stress, however I do strongly advise you find a veterinarian to examine her just in case it is a bacterial infection. Unfortunately there are no over the counter medications for this condition.
